You are encouraged to sanitize your hands on entering and leaving our buildings and respect people’s distance.

We recommend that masks are worn when entering/leaving and moving around the buildings, please do remove your masks once sitting down if you wish.

Social distancing aisles remain (on the right as you face the altar) at St Andrew’s and St James’ for those who wish to ensure more personal space.

We will continue to distribute pre-intincted wafers during communion rather than reinstate the chalice at present, until strong feeling emerges in our congregations to do otherwise.

If you can get access to Lateral Flow Tests, we would like to encourage you to take a test prior to coming to our services if you are able.

Come and join in all things rainbow: make edible arks and decorate animal biscuits, build a giant ark puzzle, make rainsticks, rainbow keyrings and animal masks, hear the story, sing the song, and celebrate with us!*

What is Messy Church?

Messy Church is a kind of Church experience that focuses on creativity, celebration and hospitality! Anyone is welcome to attend. Most of the activities are aimed at children and young people 0-13 but we always make sure there is something for older young people and adults too. Creativity is for everyone!

What happens at Messy Church?

All kinds of things!

We start with lots of craft activities connected with the theme. These might involve making, thinking, decorating, exploring or experimenting by painting, sticking, pouring, writing, colouring, eating and more! You will always have something to take home with you! Parents can join in with the activities. After the messy time, we gather together for a story connected to our theme, a song and a prayer.

Do I have to book?

No – just turn up! We’d love to see you. If you enjoy yourselves – tell your friends!

What does it cost?

Messy Church is free to attend! There is a pot for donations for people to contribute what they are able, so we can continue to resource Messy Church and make it free for those who might otherwise struggle to attend.

What if one of us has special needs?

We aim to be as inclusive as possible and actively welcome neurodiverse people and any with physical or learning disabilities. We have a ramp and accessible toilet. We are a nut free Church and label food so you know it is safe to eat. If you are concerned we might not be able to meet your needs, get in touch and we’ll talk things through with you.

*A Rough Guide to Church for the New Year On the 6th February at 4pm our new “Rough Guide” series starts at St James with “A Rough Guide to the Bible”. Have you ever wondered what it is you are listening to on a Sunday? Have you ever tried starting to read the Bible and given up because it all seems so confusing or boring?

Have you ever wondered why the Bible seems to sometimes contradict itself, or why it seems to say things you wouldn’t expect? Do you

(secretly) not really like the Bible very much but don’t think you are allowed to say so? This session is for all of us who have sometimes wrestled with those questions, as well as anyone who has never opened it before and wondering whether or not to do so… All welcome – just turn up!

*Mothers’ Union

The Mothers’ Union meet regularly on the third Thursday of the month in St James Church at 2.00pm and welcome visitors and guests to any of their events, services and meetings.

Is it a long time since you were confirmed? Are you new to Church? Do you ever want to ask questions about what we do in Church or about our faith, but are worried that you are supposed to know it already? Do you feel stuck in a spiritual rut?

Karen is running a series of three sessions this winter:

• A Rough Guide to Reading the Bible
• A Rough Guide to Praying
• A Rough Guide to Holy Communion

These are open for anyone to attend and find out more. There is no expectation of any prior knowledge about anything and no questions are silly questions! You can attend all, two or just one session. Please get in touch with Karen if you are interested so we can plan venues and timings accordingly.

*Quiet Day

Karen is hoping to arrange a Quiet Day in Lent at Holy Rood House in Thirsk as we did two years ago. Holy Rood House is a wonderful peaceful house with lovely gardens, food, a chapel, library and art room. Please express interest or any questions to Karen. If you think you might be interested in attending, please could you let Karen know whether weekdays or weekends are easier for you.

John Helliwell has prepared a screen presentation for us which will be very helpful. This short, quiet but inclusive time may be just what we need to help us remember our brothers and sisters throughout the world and at home who are in fellowship with Mothers’ Union and many who are struggling more than we can understand at this difficult time. There will be refreshments afterwards.
