Quiet Day – 22nd April

You are invited to a Spring Parish Quiet Day from 10am to 3.30pm at Holy Rood House, Thirsk on Saturday 22nd April.

The Quiet Day will include full use of their library, art room, beautiful garden and chapel – and with wonderful food! Anyone from our United Parish can attend. Please contact Rev Karen to find out more or to express interest in making a booking.

Lent Course – every Wednesday during Lent

This year we will be once again running our Parish lent course with our Methodist friends. The course will run on Wednesday afternoons 2.30 – 4pm, beginning on 1st March. Classes will be held at The Vicarage on Church Lane and will be based on the Leeds Diocese “Rhythm of Life” Course.

The theme of the course is “Journeying with Jesus through Lent: What does it mean to be a disciple in the world today?” and it will focus on lenten themes, combined with some key issues, including Poverty, Racism and the Environment. Sessions will provide an opportunity to engage with the Rhythm of Life areas for deepening commitment: that is, praying, encouraging, sharing, reflecting, celebrating, resting and creating. The course is open to all, and Rev Karen and Rev Ian look forward to welcoming you.

Make Time for Mindfulness – every 1st Thursday

Do come and join us at our Make Time for Mindfulness sessions at St James’ Church on the first Thursday of each month, between 2pm and 3pm, for some time without phones, emails or chores. Peace and quiet, colouring and creating, and acceptance and support. Free tea and coffee available.

Note: There won’t be a session on Maundy Thursday, 6th April. So, the next one will be on Thursday 4th May!

Make Time for Mindfulness, 1 Dec & 5 Jan

On the first Thursday of each month, we have a “Make Time for Mindfulness Group” 2- 3pm at St James’ Church.

We start with a couple of minutes silence/ breathing and then spend an hour doing mindful colouring or simple crafts while listening to music, and finish with a couple of minutes silence/ breathing and a short prayer. Phones only to be used in an emergency! The idea is to provide a conflict free space to be with other people in a stress free way (and help develop patterns that enable us to sleep better). Tea and coffee available throughout.

Make Time for Music – Thursdays in Term Time

Rev Karen has started a new baby and toddler group at St. James’s called ‘Make Time for Music’ which runs from 9.30am to 10.30am on Thursdays during term time. Includes a half hour fun music group followed by half an hour coffee, catch up and free play.

In keeping with our ‘Somewhere to Belong’ statement, this is run on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis to take account of the struggles that many are facing during this financial crisis. Please do spread the word about our group to anyone with pre-school children.

A Warm Space – Thursdays at St James’ Church

St James’ Church is now registered as a ‘Warm Space’. A generous heating grant from Leeds Diocese has enabled us to heat the Church all Thursday, 9am to 5pm, and make it a comfortable space for our community.

Anyone can access the space, and there are reading materials and colouring facilities as well as toys for children (which we encourage people to tidy up after they have used them please). Disabled toilet/ baby change facilities are available.

Within the ‘warm space’ we have a “Make Time for Music” preschool group which runs on Thursdays during term time. This runs from 9.30am – 10am and tea and coffee is served following this (anyone can come in for a drink, not just parents from the group).

On the first Thursday of the month, we also have a “Make Time for Mindfulness Group” 2- 3pm which also has rolling tea and coffee.
